Assistance at Security

We recognise that getting through our security process can be a worry for our customers, so we have a designated lane for families with pushchairs and passengers requiring assistance.

To familiarise yourself with the layout of our security area before you arrive, use our 360 degree virtual tour, made in partnership with Quidity.

Search process

If you're travelling in a wheelchair but are able to stand, the security agent may ask you to stand to go through the body scanner. However, if you are not able to, explain this to the security agent and you will be able to remain in your wheelchair. In this case, however, you will have to undergo a hand search by one of our security agents once you're through the scanner. If you do not feel comfortable with having the search in public, we do have a private search area where this can be conducted.

For those with other requirements, our security staff will do their best to accommodate your needs. Please discuss this with a security agent when you approach the body scanners

Liquid allowances

You are permitted to carry any liquids, creams, gels, aerosols and pastes in bottles sized up to 100ml/100g in your hand luggage. These liquids must be placed in a clear sealable bag up to a size of 20x20cm and only one bag per person is allowed. Clear bags are available at the airport free of charge.

Prescription medication

There is no limit to the size of bottle for prescription medication; however, you must have the prescription visible on the bottle for this to be allowed through.

Other medical equipment such as epipens are also permitted. Please check the security area of our website for details.

Electrical items

There is no limit to the number of electrical items you can carry in your hand luggage; however, please remove any large electrical items from your luggage and place in a separate tray to go through the security scanner. This includes Kindles, handheld tablets, kettles and hair straighteners.

Assistance Dogs

Both you and your Assistance Dog must undertake security screening to be compliant with UK standards. We aim to make this as effortless as possible for customers.

When you arrive at the security lane, please place personal effects into the security screening trays as directed by the Security Officer. The harness can remain on your Assistance Dog.

You will be asked to stand in a body scanner to complete the security check. Your Assistance Dog is not permitted to be in the body scanner at the same time. A Security Officer will hold your Assistance Dog temporarily whilst the body scanning step is completed.

After this step, you will be asked to take a seat in the area, while your dog’s harness is searched and swabbed. Once this is complete, you can continue on your journey.

A private search room is available in the Security search area. You can request to wait in this room with your Assistance Dog whilst you and/or the harness is screened if preferred.

Please remember to collect all belongings from the security trays before leaving the area. Assisted Travel and Security colleagues will be happy to help with this upon request.
