About Malta

Malta is an island archipelago between Sicily and North Africa which enjoys almost endless sunshine and mild temperatures well into the winter. Explore the local sea life and spot marine treasures at the Blue Lagoon, considered one of the best snorkelling and diving spots in Europe. Inland, it may seem rugged and rather spartan but look a little closer and you’ll find surprises (like catacombs) hidden beneath the surface. The 5000-year-old subterranean necropolis Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is one of the country's most famous landmarks.

Maltese handicrafts such as basketware, lace and knitwear make great souvenirs for visiting tourists. You can also expect the usual big-name brands in Valetta’s Merchants and Republic Streets, and designer stores in Bay Street Mall in St Julian’s. Malta’s weekly open-air markets – found in almost every town and village – offer a far more traditional experience, and a chance to pick up local delicacies.

Various civilisations have occupied Malta over the centuries, and this cultural diversity has seeped into the local cuisine. So alongside classic Mediterranean dishes, visitors can also enjoy the likes of rabbit stew, fish pie and artisan breads. You’ll find the full range of world cuisines on offer here, from fast food to high-end gastronomy. Book onto a local food tour or visit one of the islands vineyards.

Malta hosts many festivals over the year. At the end of April, a free-to-attend fireworks spectacular takes place over several days to celebrate Malta joining the EU with the grand finale located over at Valletta’s Grand Harbour. Over the summer months there’s a three-day open-air jazz festival as well as an Arts Festival which combines music, theatre, dance, and visual arts. So, there’s sure to be something fun happening whenever you decide to visit.
