Located in the south-eastern corner of Spain, Almeria is the gateway to the arid heart of Andalusia with hot, dry weather almost all year round. Shaped by the legacy of the Moors, it's a city of fascinating contrasts - from being a film location for westerns, to providing a home for amazing marine wildlife.
Almeria is a farming region, and its many bustling local markets make a great introduction to the daily life of the area. Start at the Mercado Central de Abastos (Circunvalacion Del Mercado), a covered market where you can bag a bargain, before strolling down to San Jose to browse the selection of craft stalls. The region also boasts around 200km of coastline dotted with fishing villages, seaside towns, and unspoilt beaches.
Foodwise, enjoy distinctive delicious dishes peppered with both Mediterranean and Arabic influences. To sample local specialities, we recommend Casa Puga (Jovellanos 7), a well-established restaurant offering a variety of authentic tapas.
