About Bourgas

At the southern end of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast

Bourgas (or Burgas) is a business-like city with an ancient heritage, boasting both Greek and Roman origins and influences. Today, it's Bulgaria's largest port and the gateway to the resorts and towns of the Black Sea - and unlike the fashion for concrete elsewhere in this part of the world, it's worked hard to keep its architectural heritage in place.

Bourgas map

Bourgas offers all types of accommodation to suit any travellers budget, however, as the city keeps its prices reasonably low you may find you’re able to get a lot more for your money than you would expect. If you’d really like to splash out, you can book to stay at the Grand Hotel & Spa Primoretz where you’ll be treated to fantastic service, mouth-watering meals and a super-relaxing spa. Some visitors can be put off by the lower end hotels in the city so consider sticking to branded hotels if you want to keep costs low.

With plenty of shopping malls and big-name stores on its streets, Bourgas is the perfect place for a shopping spree. The main benefit of shopping in Bourgas is that the prices are low and you can often discover a deal. However, if you’re looking for a keepsake to remember your trip you’re unlikely to find it in the malls – instead keep a look out for the many street markets that pop-up throughout the week.

As a port on the black sea, you can expect that Bourgas has plenty of fish dishes for you to sample, take a walk down by the water’s edge and it’s easy to find restaurants boasting fresh fish. If you want to sample the seafood, make sure to look up any reviews you can find of the restaurants as the quality can vary. Alternatively, the Brewery in the heart of the city is beloved by foodies around the world as it specialises in craft ale and BBQ meats that are simply unmissable.

With influences taken from around the world, thanks to the Black Sea, Bourgas boasts a wealth of festivals and events. While you can normally find something happening in the city, here are a few of our favourites to make your visit extra special:

International Folklore Festival

Celebrating the rich history of Bulgaria’s folklore, the International Folklore Festival sees people from around the world come to Bourgas to discuss the stories of their homeland, often with accompanying performances. It’s a fantastic event for children as many locals dress up and there’s plenty of places to get your own costumes to join the fun.

Independence Day

Like the American holiday of the same name, Independence Day for Bulgaria is celebrated by large parties and incredible fireworks displays. If you’re visiting around the end of September it’s a great opportunity to meet locals and see Bourgas as its best.
